Forex-Trading Race: New York Beating London .Foreign-exchange trading volume is growing faster in New York than in London, according to data released Monday, although the U.K. capital remains by far the leader in currency trade.

The data, compiled seminannually by central banks from the major foreign-exchange trading centers around the world, show trading in currencies picked up steam globally as the economic recovery took hold.

London saw average daily volumes of $1.549 trillion in currencies traded in October, a 14% rise on April 2009, the month of the previous survey, according to the Bank of England's Foreign Exchange Joint Standing Committee. This figure includes spot trading as well as futures, options and other derivatives. In the U.S., currency trading recorded average daily volumes of $675 billion in October, up 28% from April, according to the Foreign Exchange Committee of the New York Federal Reserve.

London grabs roughly one-third of global currency flows, with New York taking around one-fifth. Other trading hubs around the world account for the remaining half.

New York's growth was driven by the expansion in electronic trading systems, which can execute trades much faster than humans. "In New York, there's a lot of high-frequency funds and day traders, so that explains some of the rise there," said Ian O'Flaherty, global head of electronic trading at Deutsche Bank AG, the world's biggest foreign-exchange dealing bank.

The high-frequency systems take humans mostly out of the equation, relying upon formulas and precise rules to execute trades based on second-by-second information. For instance, if a system detects oil prices increasing, along with a rally in stocks, it might automatically buy into commodity-backed currencies.

John McCarthy, manager of currency trading at ING Capital Markets in New York, noted that humans still dominate long-term trades, with economic fundamentals and technical analysis driving strategy, but short-term trades are increasingly made by computer-driven systems, which track market momentum and correlations to other asset classes.

Electronic trading, both via broking systems and on multi-bank platforms, rose in the U.S., with daily average volumes in October at $334.4 billion, up 25% from in April.

Another factor working in the U.S.'s favor: concerns over the credit quality of some of the U.K.'s biggest banks, said Carl Forcheski, director of foreign exchange at Société Générale in New York.

The increase in trading volumes between April and October of last year follows a sharp slump in the six months leading up to the previous report, which was skewed by an explosion of trading volumes after the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers.

The recovery in both London and New York is a sign that "confidence is coming back to the market," Mr. O'Flaherty said, with currency-only funds and other investors generating heavier foreign-exchange trading volumes.

Still, the rapid pickup in U.S. trade may not continue at this pace given that the rebound is off a severe decline, said Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at BNY Mellon in New York.

Earlier Monday, Australia's central bank said trading volumes had grown by 14% in the six months to October to reach an average of $141.6 billion a day. In Canada, total turnover increased by 6.2% from $56.4 billion in April 2009 to $59.9 billion in October, according to the Canadian Foreign Exchange Committee in a report released through the Bank of Canada. Equivalent Japanese data are expected Tuesday.

The central banks' figures were mirrored by CLS Bank—an industry utility that ensures each side of a currency deal gets paid.

In 2007, the Bank for International Settlements said the foreign-exchange market produced $3.2 trillion a day in flows. It is due to update its benchmark triennial survey later this year.

In market action Monday, the dollar gained against the yen but was lower against the euro as investors shied from taking big positions ahead of a week flooded with economic data and key interest rate decisions from the U.S. and Japan.

"The market has a lot to focus on," said Jessica Hoversen, fixed-income and foreign-exchange analyst at MF Global in Chicago. "Traders are cautious ahead of what's to come."

Hurting the yen are expectations that the Bank of Japan will introduce further monetary stimulus into the markets in a bid to fight deflation—a persistent decline in consumer prices. Wednesday, the Federal Reserve is expected to leave its rates near zero, but reiterate that it will end as planned its asset-purchase program in March. Friday, the U.S. releases the first reading on economic growth in the fourth quarter.

Late in New York, the euro was at $1.4154 from $1.4139 late Friday. The dollar was at 90.23 yen from 89.87 yen, while the euro was at 127.71 yen from 127.07 yen. The U.K. pound was at $1.6241 from $1.6114. The dollar was at 1.0397 Swiss francs from 1.0414 francs.
